March 21st (2008) is Purim the Jewish holiday of costumes, candy, and merry-making. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Purim
The centerpiece to the holiday is the reading of the Book of Esther (Original Testament) in its entirety. Many audiences treat the reading like an old fashioned (to non-Jews) melodrama. When the villain is named everyone stomps their feet and hisses. Portions of the story are sung by the whole audience.
Other plays, readings, and even puppet shows are performed before, during, and after the holiday.
It is also, a traditional day for adults to give gifts and fruit baskets to each other.
In many countries with a high Jewish population it is a popular secular holiday with public parades, music, music, and food. Many non-Jews have participated in these festivals for generations.
No, I am not Jewish.
I am not Christian or Muslim either.
I am not an Atheist.
I did work in a costume shop for a while.

My wedding is leaning towards an elegant picnic theme. We are serving cold appetizers/ fingerfoods in baskets, sipping wine and using daisies as flowers. It also helps that our ceremony is taking place in the evening along a dock, and the reception inside a glass hall alongside the river (and dock) (don’t worry, no checkered tablecloths). Does your wedding have a theme?

Anyway….
Mom: Gardening things (Gloves, seeds, watering can, etc)
Dad: Snack basket (Pretzels, Assorted Nuts, Honey Roasted Peanuts)
Sister: Undecided
Dog: New chew toy and Beggin’ Strips
Cat: Treats
Hamster: Treats
Aunts, Uncles, Grandmas, Grandpas, etc: Chocolate Chip cookies
So, what are you getting your family?
